Rearrange Your Bedroom for a Fresh Look

If you’re looking to spruce up your bedroom, we, at REM Decor, never underestimate the power of a simple rearrangement. One of the least expensive ways to revitalize your space, it simply entails reorganizing your furniture and decor.

Not only is re-examining what you currently have with fresh eyes a greener, less expensive way to make a change, it can also make you appreciate what you already have a little more. and frequently a lot more reliable compared to purchasing something brand-new. The design of a space is essential for mirroring the character of the person who lives there.  To help you get started, we’ve put together a few tips and tricks.

Put Everything in its Right Place

Make sure your bed is on the largest wall, and your furniture is fashioned around it. Putting huge design items over large pieces of furniture can often have a great visual impact; as an example, a large cast iron art piece or huge print over your bed can appear like a headboard. You could also make use of large pieces to develop aesthetic zones in a room. If you do not have large pieces, a collection of various, similarly-colored framed-photos is a great way to present pictures of close friends and families.

Shelves can be both functional as well as attractive. Use shelves that match the furnishings to include some comprehension to your decorating plan. And don’t forget, you can make use of a home window sill as a shelf too! Use the things that you already have.

Let the Light In

Make your windows a focal point of the room. Adding in some curtains and allowing natural light into the room is a great way to freshen up your bedroom. Natural light also helps you wake up better in the morning. Lacking a lot of windows? Use a floor mirror or wall mirror to help reflect what light you do have.

Get Rid of the Electronics

Research is full of evidence that using electronic tools prior to bed can disrupt your sleep. Get rid of your phone and laptop computer chargers from your bedroom (maybe keep them in the living room instead?) so you won’t be tempted to check them during the evening. And either do away with your TV or come up with an innovative means to cover it, like a removable mirror panel.

Find the Right Temperature

We know that this one isn’t a rearranging tip, but optimum sleep is achieved when the temperature of your room is correct. Find out what works for you and stick to it!

Your bedroom is one of the most important rooms in your home. By rearranging things and making a couple small changes, it can be turned into the oasis it needs to be!

Choosing Hardwood Floors for Your Space

The selection process when choosing a new hardwood floor is one of the most basic yet important decisions a homeowner has to make when undertaking a renovation, as it affects every other little thing. While there are plenty of different alternatives, from carpeting to tiles, REM Decor knows that the most versatile and classic is hardwood.

There are many questions to ask yourself when picking your hardwood: is your budget the biggest factor? Or is the appearance all you care about? Determining what’s most important to you will help you choose the right choice a little easier.

Here are some of my top tips:

Know Your Material

Your basic choices are solid wood and synthetic wood. Solid wood is what you normally think of as a hardwood flooring: thick, solid planks of timber. Engineered wood is constructed from a veneer layer that rests atop a core of plywood. The construction of the flooring you’re working with will help determine what kind of wood would be best for your space.

Typically, oak is the most common choice of wood flooring. It’s a very sturdy wood that holds well with age. It has a beautiful natural grain and white oak is typically chosen because it doesn’t have the pinkish tones of red oak. In other instances, walnut is a more a prominent selection. While a little softer compared to oak, it has a deep color that makes it excellent for rooms where a darker surface is desired. Other easily available woods include cherry, hickory, maple, and ash. The final decision greatly boils down to individual choice in regards to shade and grain.

Go for Quality

Just like most products, not all hardwood is created equal. Choosing a product isn’t really just a matter of selecting a favourite colour. You want to make sure that you’re choosing something that will last a long time and not just look good for the short term. A variety of various other factors can also come into play that have an effect your choice. Don’t forget to consider the durability of the wood, as well as its ability to hide scrapes, damages and dirt.

Think about Traffic

The more people that are walking on the floor, the more durable your coating should be. If you have kids or animals, select a distinctive wood floor or one with personality and color variant. Matte coatings also tend to lessen the appearance of damages and scratches.

There are many other things to thing about when choosing a hardwood floor, but it’s best to start with these. If you need further information, don’t hesitate to reach out to REM Decor and contact us today!

How Lighting Can Affect Your Home

Have you ever wondered if that dim pendant light above your dining table has affected the look of your home? The simple answer is yes, but that can easily be fixed. It’s quite obvious that the quality of light can influence people in different ways, ranging from the happiness and productivity of workers in a fluorescent-bulb-infused office, to people sitting in a candlelit-restaurant dining room. These findings are especially true for your home.

When your home is lit brighter, it has more visual charm, whereas houses that are dark and plain appear dated and dismal. I’ve spoken to some of my real estate friends and they often suggest updated light fixtures, as well as soft paint colors, for clients looking to make the most when selling. This is because visual appeal is the most important thing in your home.

Here’s a breakdown of some common lighting and how they affect a space:

  • LED – these bulbs are the most modern technology and are extremely energy-effective. Nonetheless, most just provide one-directional lighting.
  • Fluorescent bulbs – these provide an even, yet cold light. Their favoured use remains in really dark rooms, such as in attics, cellars, or outdoors on porches.
  • Incandescent lights – these bulbs are the most typical. They’re budget-friendly and produce a warm and welcoming light, however they are not as energy effective as various other bulbs.

It’s obvious that great lighting can improve the mood as well as desirability of your home. And the terrific thing about it? A simple table light can transform any dark corner! You can also add drama as well as sparkle to any kind of area with the addition of a chandelier. The options are endless.

If you’re looking to make a positive change in your home or office development, let me help you. I have great connections with lighting suppliers and a long history of helping clients find the best way to light their spaces. I look forward to hearing from you!

Simple Ways to Update Your Space

It’s amazing how fast interior design is constantly evolving, so it’s no wonder it’s so easy to grow tired of your home decor. Everything from art prints, side tables, and furniture can go out of style year to year, but I want to let you know that, if you have the right foundation, you can easily spruce up your home or office with a few simple changes. Accessories are one of the simplest ways to upgrade without shelling out a fortune.

My first idea? Create an accent wall! It’s a simple change that can draw the eye to something new. Whether you decide to use wallpaper or hang a new art piece, making one wall in your room a different shade or pattern makes a big difference. Perhaps you can even incorporate a gallery wall for an added effect.

Don’t toss aside throw pillows. If your bedding or sofa is seeking an upgrade, adding throw pillows or recovering existing ones can lighten things up in any space and alter its entire appearance. Same rule applies with blankets and other accents. Nowadays, there’s an abundance of textures, prints, and shades to take a look at that can make a big difference in a little amount of time.

Change up your rugs. Now, this may seem like an easy one, but it can have the most significant impact on an office or room in your home. A rug can have an affect on any colour scheme, as well as be a great focal point. After all, it is typically the largest piece in any room.

My last suggestion brings a breath of fresh air to update your space: plants. Adding a little greenery can spruce up a boring living room and infuse your surroundings with some much-needed visual appeal. Plants add texture, shade, and frequent height to a room. Simply pick some up at your local nursery.

Well, there you have it! A little updating can go a long way to refresh your home. Whether you’re located here in Surrey, or are on the other side of the country, these simple tips are applicable to all locations. Stay on top of trends season to season and make small changes for a big difference. Contact me today for further information.

How to Pick the Best Colours for Your Home

Did you know that paint colours can have the most significant effect on your room, while also being one of the most cost effective ways of updating? The tricky part is, committing to a new paint color can be terrifying for a lot of people. That’s where my decor services come in!

It might be a mistake that’s quickly remedied, but choosing a paint colour is still a struggle for a number of people. The truth is, people will often choose something that looks good on the paint chip, without considering what it will look like on all of their walls. Or they will wind up going for the safest option, which can often translate as uninteresting. With help from R.E.M. Decor, we can work together on choosing the best paint colours for your space.

From the latest trends to classic neutrals, I can equip you with the tools required to make a decision that you’ll be happy with for a long time! First of all, take into consideration the shape and size of your space and how much light shines through during the day. Choices can vary vastly for small and large spaces, as well as the furniture that is used in each. Also, take into account adjacent rooms and whether or not you’ll be carrying the colours through, or leaving them unique to each room. This is specifically important if you’re somebody who loves brilliant paint shades. Make sure your paint colors from room to space do not clash with each other, as this could actually influence the feeling of each space.

Most homeowners don’t properly examine their paint shades. Also, when you think you have picked the ideal shade, you should sit with it for a while it to make sure it’s actually a shade you could live with. I recommend you order a sample of a couple of colours you’re considering. You can use them in various locations of the space you’re going to paint and watch them from different angles at various times of the day. It may sound a little tedious, but it’ll make your decision much easier!

As you can probably tell, picking a colour for walls is a process. At R.E.M. Decor, I’m here to make your life a little easier, so if you’re having trouble with your selections, please contact my interior design company today and we can work together to ensure you get the right look and feel to your home!
